Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps?

Short answer: the most common reasons are an unverified or suspended profile, the wrong primary category, searching from too far away, being filtered out as a duplicate, or simply having fewer reviews and less activity than the businesses above you. Work through the checks below in order: the first ones are quick to fix.

Before you start, search the way a customer would: on your phone, logged out of your Google account, from inside your service area. Searching your own business name from home isn't a fair test.

1. Your profile isn't verified

An unverified profile won't show properly in search. Log in at business.google.com. If you see a "Get verified" prompt, finish it. Most contractors now verify with a short phone video showing their vehicle, tools and proof of business. See our step-by-step Google Maps guide.

2. Your profile is suspended

If your dashboard shows a suspension notice, your profile won't appear at all. Common triggers: a keyword-stuffed business name, a virtual office or P.O. box as your address, or big edits made all at once. Fix the cause first, then submit Google's reinstatement request with proof of your business (a license, a utility bill, photos of signage).

3. Your primary category is wrong

Your primary category was the #1 map ranking factor in Whitespark's 2026 survey of local SEO experts. If a roofer picks "Contractor" or a painter picks "Construction company", Google has a hard time matching them to "roofer near me" or "house painter". See the categories top contractors actually use.

4. The searcher is too far away

Proximity to the person searching was the #2 factor in the same survey. A service-area business still ranks mostly around its verified address. You may be #1 in your own neighborhood and invisible 10 miles away. That's normal, and it's why we check rankings at points across your whole area rather than from one spot.

5. You're closed when people search

"Business is open at time of search" ranked #5 in 2026. If your hours say 9–5 but people search at 7 pm, you'll drop. List your real hours, including any evening or weekend availability, and add special hours for holidays.

6. You have a duplicate listing

Old listings, a listing at a previous address, or one someone else created can split your reviews and confuse Google. Search your business name and phone number on Google Maps. If you find a duplicate, request that it be merged or removed through Google's support.

7. You're being filtered

Google hides businesses that look too similar to one ranking nearby, for example two businesses with the same category at the same address. If you share an address with another company, make sure your name, phone, category and website are clearly distinct.

8. Competitors have more reviews and activity

Review count, rating, recency and a steady flow of new reviews are all top-15 factors. In our September 2026 check of five trades, top-three businesses had a median of 122 to 3,384 reviews depending on the trade and city.

9. You have no website, or a weak one

Several top factors in the survey come from the website linked to your profile: keywords in its title and headings, content about your service towns, and your name, address and phone matching your profile. A profile linked to nothing, or to a Facebook page, gives Google much less to go on.

What to fix first

  1. Verification and suspensions: nothing else matters until these are sorted.
  2. Primary category and hours: minutes to fix, often with results within weeks.
  3. Duplicates.
  4. Reviews and a proper website: these take longer but move you up for good.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my business show up for my name but not for my service?

Searching your exact name is an easy match for Google. Ranking for "plumber near me" means competing on category, proximity, reviews and your website. Fix your category first, then work on reviews and service pages.

How long after verification does a business appear on Google Maps?

Usually within a few days. Ranking in the top three for competitive searches takes longer: typically a few months of steady reviews and activity.

Can I pay Google to show up on Maps?

You can run Google Ads or Local Services Ads to appear in sponsored spots, but you can't pay for a higher organic Maps ranking. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something that doesn't exist.
